Community Spotlight
For the longest time, I’ve turned to complaining — because I didn’t know any other way to release that energy pent up by being frustrated about an outcome (or behaviour of certain people). Now that I’ve realised that there is always a way to channel that energy in a positive way.
The main frustration that helped me put in a lot of energy in [this] project was that there are a lot of people that think that behaving like a jerk (or worse bullying others) is acceptable behaviour. But because I had come across one of Simon Sinek’s talks — I realised that one way I could help was finding ways to encourage others (that these people are likely feeling disconnected). And isn’t life more fun when you do it with others? So, I created this project to bring in people who are similarly frustrated about the same things as me — and want to do something about it.
The best place to find all about the 10,000 Notes of Encouragement project is through the official page gofundme.com/10knotes) and there will be a link to learn more about me.

Topic for this week – It Starts With You
When I was interviewing Alexandra Black-Paulick of the Positive Impact podcast in episode 77 she hit on a theme that I love and it was summed up in the quote she shared from Mahatma Gandhi, “be the change you’d like to see in the world.”
What this quote is saying is it all starts with you. This is something I often talk about with my clients.
If you want to have more peace in your life you need to take on being peaceful. If you want people in your life to be more considerate you need to practice being outrageously considerate.
I was laughing with a couple of women in my BNI chapter when we gathered recently for a holiday partly. We all shared personal examples of how we on occasion do the opposite of this.
For instance, it drives me crazy when other people are being judgmental. But it only drives me crazy because I’m judging them for being judgmental. Have you ever found yourself doing this?
It can look like getting angry at people who are easy to anger, being intolerant of intolerance, gossiping about people who gossip, or complaining about people who complain. The list goes on…
Let’s all laugh at ourselves and our humanity. Let’s take a breath. And now let’s commit to practice being what we’d like to see in the world. It starts with us.
What would you like to see in the world? It all starts with you.
That’s it from me for now.

Congratulations on your nomination Jodi! That is fabulous and very well-deserved! I have totally experienced what you’re talking about in this episode. In our home, we do these “no complaining / no criticizing” challenges and the BIGGEST challenge is not complaining or criticizing when we’re trying to show someone else what they’re doing… it ends up being a tiny loop of criticism and complaining. Have so experienced this with judgment too.
Lately I’ve been really focused on practicing appreciation and love. For example, when I want to say “Hey, you’re criticizing!” instead I take a look at what the other person is really doing underneath that criticism. Maybe it’s trying to make themselves feel better about something, so then I’ll send them some love and compassion. Maybe they would like to see something improve, so then I’ll appreciate the fact that they want something to get better. It’s definitely a practice and I’m so not perfect at it, but it is a fun little game that makes me feel better and more loving overall! 🙂
I love that, Maritza! We may not do things perfectly but if we keep at them we get better over time and eventually achieve mastery. Can you imagine being a master of love an compassion?! That’s a life worth living!
Jodi this is fantastic – congratulations on being nominated! I will admit – I have never listened to a podcast, period. Now I am inspired to do just that! Thank you.
I also want to say that judging is one of my pet peeves, and when I find myself judging someone for being judgmental, I have circled back to laughing. It’s funny how we act out our pet peeves. We must be the change! Thank you for this reminder!
Laughing at our missteps is a great first step. When you have compassion for yourself you will naturally have compassion for others.
Congrats, Jodi! How awesome that your dedication to helping others is being recognized! And I was seriously cracking up at what we ALL do! You are so right! I have recently been focusing on the be peaceful to bring peace part. I’ve come a LONG way. 🙂
Congratulations to you, Amber! Practicing peace is no joke, especially when you’re a busy woman. It’s a gift you give yourself. With practice, someday you’ll be able to be peaceful in a tempest and it will pay huge dividends.
Congratulations!
Yes, yes and a thousand times more YES!
We are sometimes so blind to ourselves and hold others under magnifying glasses. We wait for others to do before we do, like little kids in kindergarten… Being the change in the world that we want to see in others will happen more if we let go of waiting for others to be it, and start leading and inspiring with our own way of living and being!
Thanks for the reminder, and for you being the voice of the change…. 🙂
